John Norum = Perfect in the album, Not So Perfect live
I'm myself a guitar player and I had 2 reasons to start playing guitar (I was a keyboardist previous of that) :
1 - *One* song of Dire Straits : Money for nothing
2 - *ALL SONGS* of Europe where John Norum plays ! (especially the TFC Album)
So of course for me John was a *god of guitar* during many years.
But .. yes there is a "but" (not a "butt" ! don't make me say what I don't want
) , but things changed slightly when I heard Europe live tours. There I was highly disapointed.
Understand me : I have worked on John's solos and I know it by heart (but of course don't ever ask me to play it at the same speed than him on the albums, except some of them.. maybe Cherokee & Carrie ;)).
I would accept some live improvisation (not sure this word is english
) around these solos, but I was expecting to at least hear let's say 80% of these solos that I'm in love with when John plays it live. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case at all ... the solos once played live are very different from the album ones especially for the hardest parts ! (the easy parts are often strictly the same) I hope you can understand how disapointing it can be for a "guitar student" like me
.
Now some would say "hey it's normal that they are different, live is made for improvisation, take the cd if you want the original solos". But for me live is also made to be able to see in real your favorite musician play what you have been dreaming to be able to play without managing to do it !
My prefered solo is the one of "Ninja", what masterpiece ! For me it's equal to Mozart, equal to Beethoven, equal to any great musician work. When I hear it in the album, it gives me wings (of tomorrow :D). And when I hear it played live, then I'm flying On Broken Wings (;))
I have listened to other great guitarists in live to see if this was the same for every one of them, namely Yngwie Malmsteen and Joe Satriani, and I can tell you that this is not the case. They manage to play the hardest parts of their solos perfectly in live and you have even more than what you would have wanted.
So this is the only critic I can address to John Norum : he disapoints me in live. But he will for sure remain my favorite guitar composer for the work he has done on the Europe albums .. hmm .. on the *PREVIOUS* albums of course. Cause I have already said that the solos of "Start From the Dark" album are totally uninteresting for me (sorry I don't like simplicity ;) even if it's "more organic").
Concerning the subject of this topic i.e John is leading Europe. I think there is some truth in this. He is leading with Joey now I think. And I must say that I'm disapointed too that Mic has been put behind on the mix. Mic is a great musician, I'm a fan of him too (as much not to say more than of John
). Mic has never disapointed me even on live. For me, Mic is the best musician of the team and should be respected much MUCH more.
Anyway cheers to John if he's reading this, I just hope to hear you playing "Ninja" solo , I mean the *real* Ninja solo live one day
man I would pay a lot for this !
Cu all
